HOLY WEEK 2020

HOLY WEEK 2020

As we begin Holy Week, we do so in the most unusual and unwelcome of circumstances. It is difficult to imagine, never mind live in, these times. We will pray for each other, support each other – even, and maybe especially, at distance.

Our Holy Week Ceremonies will go ahead and I hope that as many of you as possible will join in prayer through these days. Hopefully or webcam kilmoveeparish.org/webcam will help us to be united in space and time. I am aware however that technology can let us down and, by all accounts, the demand for broadband is very intense at this time. This may well add difficulty to the situation. But with or without camera, know that our parish will pray the liturgy of these days. I will make audio recordings of all that happens, around prayer time, and post it on the Parish Website as soon as possible after each event.

Some resources are available on our Diocesan Website to help those praying through Holy Week at home this year. They offer suggestions for individual and family prayer and some things to do to help deepen our faith through these days. The link is achonrydiocese.org/bringinghome

During these days, we pray that the Lord’s journey to Calvary will help our world as it struggles with COVID-19 and that our sights will be set less on the Cross and more on the Empty Tomb of Easter Sunday and to the new hope and promise that delivers.

As the sun set

As the sun set

On Tuesday evening I was leaving Urlaur Church after Mass and noticed a lovely sunset so went as quickly as I could to Urlaur Abbey and Lake.  Most of these photos are from that journey!  There’s another from the following evening, taken in Naomh Mobhi Cemetery, Kilmovee.  Just thought I’d share!

Liking this!

Liking this!

It’s among my favourite Carols and I came across this version yesterday. Thought I’d share.

LIKING THIS TOO!

On Tuesday December 15th, there were two performances by schools of the parish.  The children of St Teresa’s N.S. Kilkelly brought us to St Celsus’ Church and guided all there through a lovely and musical telling of the Christmas Story.  A lovely moment, among many, was the journey of the Little Drummer Boy (and so he was) to join Jesus, Mary and Joseph in the borrowed shed.  Couldn’t but be proud of them all.  A few video clips and images from the gathering and of a beautifully decorated Kilkelly (Crib included). Well done to all involved.

The Church gathering concluded with a candlelight performance. Thought it worth a video recording.  Think it was the right call! Enjoy.

There was another performance by the pupils of Tavrane N.S. in Kilmovee Community Centre.  A great variety of talent on show and some very amusing moments.  Well done to all involved there too.  Sadly, phone battery had ran low so no video footage and only one photo!  That said, many parents were recording so the fine performances of the evening will long live into the future.  Rightly so too! It’s a pity you cannot “hear” this photo.  Five musicians all.

Proud of you!

As ye got off the bus …..

As ye got off the bus …..

(These words, I placed on the front page of our Parish Bulletin this week.  I hope they reflect something of the truth and the desire to reach out to and be involved with our younger people ….)

The bus pulled in at Kilmovee Community Centre around 5pm on Friday and as its door opened, I saw many of our young people step to the street.  “Where were ye?” I asked and the reply was around three days spent in  Achill.  It was the Foróige Club and its members and some of the leaders were coming home.  It was lovely to see you all – so happy together and full of life.  I spoke to some of you as I went to post a letter and your responses were gracious and your smiles infectious.  As I sat back into my car, I was pleased that you had this time to enjoy your youth and share your friendship.

At the same time, I felt a little sad because increasingly I feel at a remove from your world.  As a priest in your parish, I want you to have the fullest and most enjoyable life imaginable and want our shared “Faith” to be part of that experience too.  I’m often at a loss to know how to connect with you and accompany you, insofar as you want or need, during these years.  That  said, I believe you are a central part of my calling to be a priest.  I realise we have different tastes (try listening to some of my music!!) and that our Church may seem out of touch to many of you.  Yet, it is a church of and for the young.  How evident this was in the wake of the Berkeley Accident when the ringing of a parish church bell in Dublin, brought people – young people in abundance to pray and sing their way through shock and grief.

The Church – lived in the day to day life of our Parish, seeks to welcome and encourage its people.  Many of you are deeply involved in parish life, from sport to various clubs, among you too, are members of our choirs, readers and former Altar Servers.  All of you have a place in our midst and a part to play.

So, a favour!  Please give some thought to how best we can be “Parish” for you.  Please give some thought to how best Fr John and I can be “Priest” for you.  Maybe there’s something we can do together to sustain or  deepen the Faith that is in you and to bring to our parish, your vibrancy, enthusiasm and obvious goodness.

Enjoy the summer!

Urlaur Pattern 2014

Urlaur Pattern 2014

The Pattern went very well this year with a fine crowd in attendance. Bishop Brendan joined us for Mass and was the Principal Celebrant and preached the homily.  People were glad to see him there and, he too, enjoyed the gathering very much. Well done to all involved.
